We are located in the center of the Gulf Coast, putting us in easy reach to or from anywhere along the US coastline of the Gulf of Mexico. The natural beauty of the area of Pensacola, Florida, is a prime location for shooting commercial photography.
Most designers set their visuals arbitrarily, either by pulling values out of the sky or by adhering to a baseline compositional grid. The former case isn’t worth discussing here, but the latter requires a closer look.
When using a baseline compositional grid, the first thing you must decide on is your baseline grid unit. You’ll commonly see baseline compositional grid values of something like 1080x???, but where does a value like that come from?
As you might have guessed, most photographers choose this unit arbitrarily. The problem with this approach is that the resulting baseline compositional grid unit is not directly related to the primary format ratio or size, which is the most fundamental design element of the image.
The average person processes visuals 60 thousand times faster than words alone. Also, a visual can increase a viewer's comprehension by 89%. Evocative imagery that draws the viewer in, enabling our clients to deliver their corporate message.
As it turns out, the golden ratio provides us with a formula for proper format and composition of an image. We can now set our format ratio with absolute certainty in any situation! Better still, we can use this information about photographic composition to make more informed decisions about all the spatial aspects of our images, such as:
- The amount of negative and/or positive space that appears within the frame.
- Padding, margins, and other units of negative/positive space.
- Compositional line- in a given image
- Any and all spatial properties that you wish to relate compositionally.
The power of golden ratio photographical composition cannot be overstated. By choosing the format ratio of your primary visual format as your new “baseline unit”, you are effectively tying all the dimensions of your layout together with the golden ratio.
